I guess understand why some people find today annoying. But I like it. Why wouldn't I want to see my old friends and meet some new people. Plus, I've never had anyone show up from home, which is...sorta good, sorta not.

[Curt shrugs. He holds up a gnarled stick.]

Anyway, at the risk of sounding morbid or metaphysical, I'm looking for Death-with-a-capital-D, who should recognize this branch came from and of course I'm hoping to see the one who gave it to me the last time we had one of these things. So I'll be sitting on the steps of building 10 if anyone wants to say hi.

So how do you meet Death? I got a thing or two to say to it.

Well, obviously I tried posting a message. But I think there's only one way anywhere but here, and it's the one most people are trying to avoid.

Did that one and didn't see anyone. Death's a shit deal.

Huh. I dunno, maybe you just believed in a shit afterlife.

You think it matters what I believe in?

I dunno. I'm not sure I really buy whether it matters how good you were by anybody else's moral standards. And I'm not really sure what I believe in, because I've always believed there was something, but--who knows, right? And now I believe it involves getting to see old friends and maybe dodging ninjas, hey, why not? I believe a lot of things depend on your state of mind.

But if you're dead, you should know more than I do about all that.

[There's a long, thoughtful pause that, from the sounds of it, also serves as an opportunity to light a cigarette.]

...Ninjas?

I think there was something about ninjas. So I hear.

Guess I'm doing the dead thing wrong.

You ever get ninjas here? I remember zombies and shit, but no ninjas.

For a while I wondered if my sitar player was a ninja, but that was silly of me. I mean, except for that one time when he was during a curse.

Yeah, sure, but curses don't count and ninjas wouldn't play sitars. They'd play... y'know, air guitar. Something quiet.

You're in a band?

I guess.

Yeah, were releasing an album in a few weeks. It's sorta hard to keep a thing like that going in the City, but were managing so far.

Good luck with that. City's not too bad for artists, y'know?

Thanks. It's been pretty good for me, I guess, it's just not easy to hold a band together, with people disappearing.

Not if you're the lead singer. No one cares 'bout the backup long as the lead's there.

Yeah, well I'd like to be able to count on there being backup.

Makes sense. What kinda music?

Rock. Getting more specific than that is something for critics to worry about, not me.

So what about those critics? You any good?

Well, that depends on who you ask, yeah? Though everyone agrees that I'm probably crazy. But I am actually a pretty big deal back home.

Got nothing against crazy.

Yeah? What's your band called?

Well, here it's Time Bomb. Back home, before all the solo stuff, it was the Rats.

Rats... never heard of 'em. Still, big-time rock star. Bet you have to beat the fans off with a stick on days like this.

I'm beginning to think I don't exist in most people's timelines. But yeah, I do get fans on these days sometimes.
