28th Note

So I know there's more important stuff to worry about and I'm looking for a safe place to wait things out, but I can't help but wonder who is and who isn't still a member of my band. I'm pretty much always looking for musicians with experience in rock bands or any interest in rock music whatsoever, since it's hard to get people to stick around around here.

Cat ran off, fyi, but that's nothing unusual and it's probably better at taking care of itself than I am.

Hey, man. So uh, I kind of think this past weekend was kind of the most awesome thing that's ever happened to me. We were like totally this really awesome band, and uh, it was kind of the best thing ever?

So, you know. If you guys still need a bassist? I'm kind of around.

[Not that Stephen can actually play bass. But for some reason he totally got to keep his bass from the curse weekend, and it really isn't too different from guitar. He's practicing!]

Yeah, we could maybe use a bassist right now. Rehearsals are canceled for the immediate future but I could send you some recordings.

[Stephen's heart leaps into his throat and he makes an extremely un-manly squeak noise, but manages to transform it into a much cooler cough-sound.]

Oh. Uh. Seriously?

Well, we'd have to see how you really played, but sure. [And by 'we' he basically means Demyx and whoever else he can scrounge up.]

Well, uh, I'm not a bassist normally. But I've been playing guitar for... eight years now? But I remember playing the bass, and I remember it being kind of fun to play. From the weekend, I mean. So, uh, I've been practicing with it a bit.

So, you know. Sorry if I'm not as good as I was at the concert.

Well, at least you're actually a musician. And I guess you could switch back if the bass doesn't work out...and anyway it's not like most of Time Bomb's stuff is particularly complex. More just loud.

[Stephen laughs]

Hey, loud work for me. I had a band back home. We played at a... similar volume.

I think this could work. Tell me about your band.

We were called Sex Bob-Omb. It's like, your sort of stereotypical 'bunch of poor hipsters in their early-twenties' garage-rock, you know? We never did that many shows. But we were recording an album when I, you know, left. And we opened for The Clash at Demonhead at Lee's Palace last spring!

I'd ask what you guys do, but I guess I got a pretty good idea of it, being in the band and everything.

[Stephen blushes a bit and looks down]

The Clash? I like the Clash--well, I don't hate the Clash. It's hard to say sometimes, because it still feels weird listening to music that hasn't come out for me yet, and maybe won't 'cuz of the whole different worlds thing.

Well, we're doomed to be being a local band forever but we played this one really great show at the Palace, I could show you the video. And it's not hard to draw an audience around here with the ticking and the boredom.

Oh man, I wish we had opened for The Clash. 'The Clash at Demonhead' is a kind of pretenious artband from Montreal. They're pretty big in Canada, though.

The Clash is a little before my time, actually. It was 2006 when I left.

[Stephen watches a few bits and pieces of the concert video. Curt is extremely... mesmerizing on stage, especially when Stephen doesn't have playing his instrument to distract him.]

Dude, that show was AMAZING!

Well any experience is something. I'm from 1974 and I have a kind of really patchy idea of the sort of stuff that's going to happen next.

[Curt grins. There's no humility in his character. Anywhere.] I know, right? But I got all kinds of reactions and not necessarily what I was going for so I'm trying to figure out how to really push people's buttons here.

Well, it looked like buttons were pushed that night, man. [Stephen gives a rare cheeky-grin]

But seriously, it like totally awesome that you really put so much into the performance.

A lot of the time I'm just trying really hard not to throw up.

You'd think, but I got a fair amount of...bafflement. Which is okay, but not quite...something.

I get nervous I guess, but that just makes me more nervous. Plus I'm not necessarily sober when I play shows, only now I'm trying to be more professional. And now, well, I've been doing this a long time.

Did you have your own band? Back home?

Of course. I got the Rats--only the greatest garage band known to mankind--together when I was just finishing high school, and years later when that fell apart I went solo. I also toured with Brian Slade for a while. And then, well, that all fell apart and now I'm here.

That sounds really awesome, man. Like, really really awesome.

I'm not coming off as a giant dork, am I? Sorry, it's just that with my old band I was the only one who really took it seriously, you know? The other two were just in it to kill time. It's just... it's really awesome that there are people here who like really, seriously want to make music, too.

Consider yourself totally free to think I'm awesome any time you want without me judging you for it.

Making music, performing, it's pretty much all I've ever wanted to do since I started.

[Stephen's face breaks into a giant goofy grin. He's having a hard time not just grinning like an idiot and squeeing inside about being in an actual band with actual musicians. He looks down and tries to pull his face into a more manly and less dorky expression]

Cool, man. Me too, I guess.

Good to see someone with priorities instead of losing head and firing at whatever moves.

Well, if I had something to fire with and thought there was any chance I'd ever hit anything, maybe that would be more of a priority for me, but as it stands...

Have y' found somewhere, yet? Cos I don't really want t' stay in the flat with those harpie things goin' about. An' I could still be in the band, I wasnae any better than I am normally and it seemed t' be okay, but I'm really a DJ so....I dunno. If y' still end up needing backup guitar or something? I did want t' be a rock star before I was a DJ.

Let's go to Oh Aces. It's supposedly safe and also it's got a bar. And yeah, you can be in the band if you want--more people on stage is good and we could use a rhythm guitarist, since Stephen says he wants to stick with bass. I even have another guitar I can lend you if you need it.

D'you mean it?! Brilliant! This is the best place! [Never mind harpies.] Oh Aces, then. Too bad your cat's run off. He could've eaten the harpies for us, probably

Who knows, maybe that's what he's off doing?

I'll buy you a drink. [Pause. And this is action as Curt pokes his head into Campbell's room.] We did make sure we got paid for that concert, right?

I hope he eats them all and solves the problem, I'm sick a' being cooped up.

Cheers! [Oh, wait, Curt. Hi, Curt. Campbell turns around on his bed to faace him(as, other than the top of his chest of drawers, that is the only sitting area in his room).] We must've done! Ask Stephen. He probably dealt with that bit.

Yeah, all right.

[Curt frowns a bit.]

I'm starting to think I need management and not just, you know, vague patronage. Did I mention we have a patron? Because that sounds weird but it's basically the situation.

You didnae mention that, no. [He thinks.] I would do it mysel' if I no had a station t' get running. [pause] And even if that one nutter is still a manager now, don't hire him. I think he still wants t' kill me.

So....what's our patron do, exactly? And why're they doing it?

I have no idea who you're talking about, but okay.

His name's Adrian Veidt. He runs the Piaculum Palace and seems like he has a lot of money or at least control of where he goes and sometimes he gives some if it to me it for some reason. He's also handled a lot of the business-y stuff. He says he's really into the arts and has done this kind of thing before. I think maybe he's trying to recapture his youth. At first I thought he was trying to get into my pants but it's not like that's real difficult, so maybe I was wrong about that.

[If Curt is going to explain, he's going to explain what counts for thoroughly in Curt-world.]

I dunno his name, I just know he wants t' slice my throat or something. He's touchy.

Maybe he doesnae know it's no difficult? That's good anyway, though, if he's funding us! It's probably best if y' just don't question it too much. Anyway, I bet it's just cos he clearly knows you're brilliant!

He seems pretty observant, but yeah, you're right, it's probably just because I'm such a genius.

Lucky for us he's observant enough t' notice that, then, is it no?

Anyway, where is Oh Aces, and how do we get to it wi'out getting slaughtered, d'you think?

It's a few blocks away from here but it's not like it's on the other side of town. I suggest the cover of darkness and a lot of running. Maybe bring a baseball bat? Not that I have one.

Neither do I....guitar case, maybe?
